Foderingham: We just didn't get going

WES Foderingham believes Swindon Town were lacking the required levels of desire during the goalless draw at Hartlepool.

The Robins stopper might have kept his second consecutive clean sheet of the new campaign but he, like the entire coaching and playing staff, cut a dejected figure as he left Victoria Park on Saturday evening.

Foderingham stressed that the Town squad needed more intensity to take all three points back to Wiltshire from the north east - and that they plan on making amends when Crawley come calling tomorrow.

“We didn’t play well at all,” he said. “From start to finish we didn’t get going. We didn’t show enough desire, enough passion, we certainly didn’t keep the ball well enough.

“Sometimes if you can’t keep the ball well enough you need to run about and we didn’t do that today. The manager’s not happy and we’re not happy either.

“We’re keen to put it right on Tuesday.

“We can’t always win but there’s a way to lose and a way to draw and today we didn’t go about it correctly.

“We should have put a bit more desire into the performance even if we did come away with a 0-0. We could have put in a bit more of an effort and we can only blame ourselves really.”

Results on the road will be crucial for Swindon if they are to make a charge on the League One promotion places in 2012/13.

And Foderingham recognised that means Town must be better away from home than they were towards the back end of last season - where they recorded just two wins and five goals in their final eight matches.

“If you look back to last season you can see, for some reason, we didn’t quite get going for away games as we did at home,” he said.

“I’m still trying to figure that out but it needs to change.

“The sign of a good side is when you’re not playing well you grind out results and grind out a win. Today we had an opportunity to win with the penalty and it’s just the way it’s going that Tommy (Miller) unfortunately has put it over the bar.

“We had a couple of other chances and we didn’t quite have the cutting edge to put it in the back of the net.”

Foderingham was pleased with another clean sheet but emphasised that three points would have left him much more satisfied.

“Before the gaffer told me they would put in a lot of high balls and that they were very good in the air,” he said.

“I needed to stay further off my line and deal with more high balls to take some of the pressure off the backline, which I thought I did.

“First and foremost I’ve got to do my job. I’ve got to go there and give 100 per cent and do my job and hopefully the boys do their job as well.

“Today I felt I did my job despite a disappointing performance, and against Brighton as well.

“It doesn’t really mean anything if we don’t get the results and today I’m disappointed even though I kept a clean sheet.”
