Francis: 'Give Malpas time'
TREVOR Francis is tipping Maurice Malpas to lead Town out of League One, and is urging the County Ground faithful to give their boss time to prove his credentials, writes ANTHONY MARSHALL.
The former England international and Birmingham City manager spent one year playing north of the border for Rangers, where he encountered the then Dundee United full-back Malpas on several occasions.
Francis admitted he expected Malpas to break into management and believes that, with a little bit of patience, Wiltshire could soon be host to a Championship football club.
"I remember Maurice as an excellent full-back. He was a good player and I came up against him and watched him numerous times," revealed Francis.
"He was the sort of person who you would have expected to go into coaching or management.
"But it's tough coming from Scotland to England. It's quite different up there to English football, as Alex McLeish is finding out, so Maurice needs a bit of time to find his feet and then I'm sure he will be a success.
"He could have some good times at Swindon. There is definitely the fan base here to have a side that's in a higher league."
Francis had a good record as a manager at the County Ground, but his fondest memory of Wiltshire stems back to his playing days.
He joked: "When I played with Birmingham we had a centre-half called Roger Hind, and he used to go through a routine before each game in the changing rooms.
"He would run, jump and get good elevation just to practice his heading.
"It was quite a low ceiling at the County Ground in those days, so when he tried it he jumped and put his head straight through the changing room ceiling."

Yes, the fans who have seen the work of Malpas the manager first hand should shut up, because a player who played with Malpas several hundred years ago say's "I think he'll do well". You can tell the season has ended because the Adver are struggling for stories. I'm just going to place myself in a cryogenic chamber for 3 months and will wake up in time for the new season. It makes it worse when we are not even in the Euro's.

"Francis had a good record as a manager at the County Ground........."
So exactly when would that have been, or does the "reporter" mean
"As a visiting manager Francis had ......."
Talk about crap reporting

No comment on Trevor Francis' thoughts about our illustrious leader. Unfortunately/fortun
ately I haven't been able to see a Town match this season. But I do remember seeing him ( TF )as a 16 year old score 2 cracking goals at CG on only his second ever league match, having scored 4 on his home debut the week before.

Course Francis was a great manager wasn't he (not).
Couldn't fault him as a player though , scored the winner in Europe final for Mr Clough's Forest.

The late Wilf Castle had been chatting to me during the morning and laughed as he declared TF`s much publicised debut had been a flash in the pan and the Town defence would soon keep him in check. Gosh how wrong he was !

Found this tucked away on the BBC sports site:
Swindon manager Maurice Malpas says fans should not expect the Robins to be making big money signings this summer.
"We won't be buying players as such, we won't be spending £100,000 on players because I think it's a waste of money," he told BBC Radio Swindon.
Malpas is looking to add four or five players to his squad for next season:
"We're speaking to a couple of clubs about taking one of their players on loan because either we can't afford to buy him or he's not available to buy."
Bit of a bizarre thing to say!! Why should spending £100k on a player necessarily be a waste of money? If he's saying that there aren't going to be that level of funds available, why not just say that?
