Reaching for the stars

SIMON Cox is itching to write his name into Swindon Town goal scoring folklore - joining the likes of Duncan Shearer, Harry Morris and Harold Fleming.

The Swindon scorer is bidding to become only the 21st Town player in the club's history to reach the 25-goal mark after finishing top scorer in his first campaign in Wiltshire.

Sam Parkin and Jan Aage Fjortoft are the only Town players to achieve the scoring feat over the last 15 years while the names remain few and far between delving further back into the club's 129-year history.

With 16 to his name last campaign in League One, Cox accepts there is still room for improvement in his game but insists he has to be targeting around the 25 mark after a successful first season.

Meanwhile, Town boss Maurice Malpas has started his search for fresh blood for next season, revealing two full backs and a right winger were on his priority list at the moment.

He also admitted he would like to add one more central midfielder and possibly a striker, if the right one was made available.

Meanwhile, Swindon Town have lined up a friendly fixture with FA Cup finallists Portsmouth on Friday, July 18.

I should hope we get a new central midfield, winger (similar to McNamee!), a striker, left and right back.

... centre back and a goalie
Posted by: International Robin, Swindon on 8:33am Wed 7 May 08
why do we need a new centre back and keeper? we have brez and smith.. ifil hansey, pat kanyuka, sean morrison (who looked pretty handy on saturday) vincent.. How many centre backs do you want to fight for 2 spots?

Or are you one of those that is convinced Plymouth are coming to buy half th Swindon Town squad

Give Brez a new contract, he only has a year left, i can see Malpas now come this time next year "we did all we could to keep him", give him a new contract at least then WHEN he does leave we can command a fee instead of looking like the mugs we have been in the past!!

Think we need a midfielder who can chip in with 10 plus goals a season, and a regular strike partner for cox, once you take cox out the picture i cant see where are goals are going to come from. To reach play offs we will need to players high in the scoring charts cox and ???.

Darren Huckerby!! Been released by Norwich.. Little bit injuy prone but if fit....???

Remember Leyton Orient!
Posted by: James Bye, Swindon on 10:41am Wed 7 May 08
Huckerby was on £10k a week at Norwich, he isn't gonna come here for a few hundred quid and the odd takeaway. We have to be more realistic, think Parkin & Mooney (scum), we need 2 good strikers FACT!! I hope MM foesn't plump for that Fleetwood from Forest Green, we need tried & tested at this level!!
Posted by: mr big, Swindon on 11:31am Wed 7 May 08
Darren Currie for me !!!!! But then again I also want Don Hutchinson so may be we could be luton Town Reserves. But we may not get relegated.
Posted by: Russ STFC, swindon on 11:36am Wed 7 May 08
sam vokes of bournemouth would be a cracking buy if possible'do we really need over the hill players going through the motions.Jamie cureton as an example.Fleetwood would be a gamble'only proven BS level
Posted by: SHEEPHEAD, SWINDON on 11:42am Wed 7 May 08
Getting a striker is a lottery looking back over the years most of our successful strikers have not really had a proven record before coming here.

I have seen Fleetwood on a few occasions and i believe he has the skill and speed to make it at our level we are not going to get anywhere without risks.Macari used unknowns and it worked as did Danny Williams.

I think Fleetwood has gone to Charlton for £250k
Posted by: SHEEPHEAD, SWINDON on 12:04pm Wed 7 May 08
I have searched for that news and have found nothing.I know Gillingham were interested. We should sign him just to annoy them.

If we are gonna take risks then surely give 1 of the youths a season of games, BLAH BLAH, tried and tested i say, FITTON GET THE CHEQUE BOOK OUT!!

It was reported at the weekend that he was off to Charlton but the signing was expected to be on 1st July.

We do need a decent midfielder, as to strikers I still feel BP will do OK BS is a good squad player, therefor as a stiker maybe fleetwood, however why pay big $$$ for someone who has yet to play leauge football????

MM will bring in 4% new players, also as to Sam Parkin fans he was great for us but does MM take a gamble on his fitness.Bary Corr has said he will play again in August ??? dont think he will, is a shame as when fit is a great player.
So its a case of wair and see(all you fans have good summer break)

Get a winger similar to McNamee, have them down the two flanks and we'll be very dangerous. Get a tall striker in that can get his head on the end even better!
Posted by: dave bamber, penhill on 6:37pm Wed 7 May 08
steve brooker is 1 possible target as city wont need him next year he is capable of banging in 15 goals , another target is lee phillips from torquay he could be the man and also that oxford lad yemi oububade is is a potentil great as patterson has filled him with confidence... we need to be realistic nobody like huckerby will come for 700 quid a week and a 15 percent off of pizza hut discount tickets.... maybe when king malpas puts us up another level we can look at big new signings!!! malpas rocks the boat!!!
Posted by: bigvicstfcfan, Swindon on 6:38pm Wed 7 May 08
i think MM is trying to build the squad in the right areas IMO. the only thing i would say is we defently do need to look for a forward to partner Cox... not just if we stumble across one. Corr would be ideal if he could stay fit but im not confident he can, and Paytner blows to hot and cold. we need a strong physicial player who can win and score headers up front and hold up the ball. i defently think MM has highlighted all the right areas which need strengthening though.

Why a new centre - because we cannot defend set pieces. We were extremely lucky against Milwall not to concede more (the two players completely unmarked in the first half one example). Every time they had a set piece it looked like we would concede and lets face it millwall are sh*t. It's been like that ever since Sturrock left. I personally dont rate Aljofree and would replace him with Kanyuka if his Leeds display was a sign of form we can expect. Vincent and Smith will do a job for you but not going to cut the mustard in the Championship if that's what we're aiming for. MC will be a big miss for us.

As for strikers, I'm a Parkin fan and would bring him back on loan to Xmas and if he can replicate his former town glory days sign him up. With regards to Fleetwood, you have to ask yourself why he couldn't cut it in Div 2 with Hereford. Apparently he has a real attitude problem. Steve Brooker would be a joke signing. The club will make a big mistake if they only buy players to try and get out of league 1 and not players who can sustain us in the Championship.

If nothing else, it's going to be a very interesting summer... U reds!

We only seem to struggle with set pieces when Alijofree is in the team. So for me it's Ifil & Kanuka or Morrison.
We need a ball winner like Joey Butler in midfield and a right winger who can cross a ball (not Roberts).
Fleetwood is definately going to Charlton so forget him.

Good comment from Tractorboy about needing a ball winner in midfield. We need a Ray McHale type player.Very rarely last season did we come back from a goal down and get a result or take control of the midfield and capitlise on a lead. I wont over critisize about last season because we had only just been promoted but next season with the right type of players arriving we should do a lot better.

Eastwood is a no go and he is too good for this league, Malpas has said he won't be spending any money, he is looking at getting loan players who he can't afford to buy or clubs won't sell MORON!!
Posted by: James Bye, Swindon on 9:03am Fri 9 May 08
Oh & didn't Eastwood trial in the reserves and King said we'll have a look again at the end of the season!!! That's nearly as good as when he chose Gary Alexannder over Bobby Zamora!!!
