THEY say nice guys finish last and Jack Smith admits the time has come for Town to start showing their nasty streak to halt a plummet down League One.
While good relations at the County Ground have never been in doubt, with most of the squad describing it as the best team spirit in their careers, Smith believes it is time to put all friendships on the back burner in the search for that winning habit.
Just one win from the last nine have left all at SN1 anxiously looking over their shoulders at a closing bottom four but a harmonious dressing room still shows no signs of cracking.
Smith now believes it is time to shed their good-guy reputations in a bid to scare their League One rivals out of points - while insisting a few harsh words between each other could also be the order of the day.
He said: "We are all good mates but on the pitch we need to be nasty and need to scare the opposition.
"Teams are finding it a bit too easy to play against us at the moment.
"That can also be said about the relationship between each other as well. I am not saying I want us all to fall out but perhaps we could have a few more arguments with each other.
"We are all really good friends here and you don't want to be hammering your best mate but we have to start doing it.
"Everyone always says it but it is tough. Maybe we need to get nastier and people have to take it in the right way."
While Town's recent record has seen them drop from being play-off hopefuls to League One also-rans over the last few weeks, the majority of the performances have not been as bad as the points tally has suggested.
Lack of confidence in front of goal and missing that rub of the green at crucial moments have frustrated everyone - but Smith believes luck is earned.
"We had three good chances to nick something at the end against Southend but it did not happen," he said. "When you are up there you get deflections but we just don't seem to be getting any of the luck. It is disappointing but maybe we have not earned our luck.
"As a defence we have not kept a clean sheet for a long time now.
"We do create chances though and as a defender you are just willing for that ball to go in and for us to score four or five and have an easy 20 minutes. We had 27 shots against Carlisle and only scored two and they have had two shots and scored twice.
"If we can end the season well we can come into next season confident, if we are here, and if you end the season badly you are already starting next season on a downer."
BARRY CORR will visit a specialist to determine the extent of his shoulder injury.
The Irishman had the shoulder put back into place on Tuesday night but surgery and a lengthy lay-off is still expected. Christian Roberts meanwhile underwent surgery on his knee yesterday and is still expecting a long lay-off.

Better still, learn to defend properly, get the ball in the box to the stikers correctly, and then you will not have to be nasty to any one

Dear Mr Cryer - not for the 1st time I'm sure may I point out that STFC play at the County Ground not SN1 which is the first part of the postcode that covers the area in which the CG is situated- along with most of Shrivvy & County Rd I would suggest - so let's cut the crap and refer to the the County Ground as just that eh? not SN1 which I know is 10 characters less to type including the space but is so naff a description of STFc's home don't you think? The late great CK would turn in his grave and wonder WTF you were talking about refering to SN1!

AS an attack Jacko You've scored naff all in the way of goals lately either and missed sitters my old grandmother of 92 could have nodded in sideways from her wheelchair whilst doing her knitting at the same time!! Ye gods why not just admit that the squad as a whole is not good enough to challenge for the play-offs or even sustain their position in League one long term but Then that would be like putting your hand up and saying -"fair cop we are rubbish" Eh?

Hear hear Malkym re SN1 references, but be fair to Mr Cryer; less chance of a spelling mistake with only three letters to type.

Well said re "SN1" Malkym. Where did that pretentious nonsense come from in the first place? And I think you underestimate the size of the SN1 area - haven't done my homework but I reckon it probably takes in most of central Swindon and Old Town. Just another example of the declining standards at SN1! (that's 100 Victoria Road, not the County Ground)

If we can't beat Port Vale , Gillingham and Millwall we will be exactly where we deserve to be divvie 2 , pjarvo you are probably right instead of being tough ,one of them will kick someones ankles and get a red and suspension which will help the run in enormously , the glass has been half full all season but Saturday it almost ran out . I also noticed the Budgie chose a higher perch to watch the game from I wonder if he witnessed what we all see week in week out from his new elevated position ?.

As you say 100 Vic Rd - mind you I reckon standards have been declining at both locations for years!

It's one thing the players saying they need to get stuck in, but when your manager tells you to stop running around so much and hold back, it seems to be a bit contradictory doesn't it !
Get rid of Malpas now and lets get back to playing how we were before Christmas.

Darren it doesn't matter if he's made the plans, they're made on behalf of the club . Any new manager coming in would still go along with the pre season friendlies , tour etc after all it would save many phone calls and he could spend more time recruiting players.
I've written to Fitton telling him I'm not renewing, I think it's a time for all disgruntled fans to stand up and be counted.
Malpas is rubbish , time to put the rubbish out !!!!

MM is not performing any better than a 3rd rate manager and it reflects on the field. That's why we are not winning. Lack of direction leads to confusion and leads to poor results. We need an inspiring manager that lifts the team and sorts out the problems fast. This is not happening and I believe we will not go forward, now or next season under MM's direction (or lack of)so AF I think the time is right now for you to make the changes. We need the right players in place for next season and a strong proven manager leading them.So side step MM if he has a contract and get us a known manager who has the contacts to get players we need to get us up in the Championship.
AF I know you are very good business man who knows only too well you don't throw good money after bad, so move on and make the changes now.Waitng until the new season could cost us any chance of promotion.
