Captain's log – Oldham was the reaction we needed

WE asked for a reaction from the players and we got one at Oldham on Tuesday night.

The performance against Walsall was totally unacceptable and it was important to get some points on the board.

When we went 1-0 up I thought we were in control, but credit to Oldham because they came out fighting.

We had to be careful not to go chasing the game and leave ourselves open at the back.

In the end I felt 2-2 was a fair reflection and it gives us something to build on with two home games coming up.

Everyone is excited about the visit of Leeds United on Saturday and I don't think the players will need any motivating for this one.

Wisey and Gus are no longer there but it is still a massive game and I hear there will be over 13,000 inside the ground.

For me it's exactly the same as the Forest game. No disrespect to them, but they are always the bookies favourites at the start of the season.

The bookies love it because lots of fans have a punt on them, but there's a lot of good managers at so-called unfashionable clubs that make it very difficult for them.

Leeds have had a great season, recovering from a 15 point deduction, but the likes of themselves and Forest have no divine right to go up.

It should be a cracking atmosphere inside the ground so hopefully our fans can make lots of noise and get right behind the lads.

All the players will want to be involved on Saturday but nobody is guaranteed a starting place.

We saw at Oldham that Maurice is not afraid to change things round, with the likes of Jerel being left out.

Pat Kanyuka came in for his second start and I thought he did very well.

The conditions were not easy for defenders but he did the basics right.

He did give us one little heart attack when he tried to dribble the ball out of defence, but we told him about that.

Apart from that I thought it was a faultless display and I'm sure he will get fitter and fitter the more he plays.

All of a sudden there is competition for places again and it means all the boys will be looking over their shoulders.

Even those guys whose names have been first on the team sheet will be sweating on their selection.

We need a full squad to select from if we are going to make any impression on the top six.
