Off-field issues cannot be used as an excuse

Town's club skipper Ady Williams' gives his verdict on a turbulent few days at the club - and the return of two teammates.

I THINK Paul Sturrock got it spot on this week when he said to the fans, if you have to protest, please do it after Saturday's game against Tranmere Rovers.' This is a big game for us against opposition that are flying at the moment and the players need to be fully focussed on the game.

Having said that, there will be no excuses if we under-perform against Tranmere.

Yes, the players read the papers and listen to the radio about the takeover but if we don't play well on Saturday it will have nothing to do with that.

The international break has been both a positive and a negative thing for us.

As I mentioned last week, after the 5-0 win over Gillingham the boys were full of confidence and just itching to get back out there.

But the squad has been carrying a few knocks lately and the 10 days off has given most of the lads time to recover.

I watched the reserves on Tuesday and it was good to see both Barry Corr and Nicho (Andy Nicholas) back in action, and back on the scoresheet.

Both players have been training hard with me this summer in a bid to get fit and we have got to know each other very well.

Barry and Nicho are both big characters as well as good footballers and their presence has been missed in the dressing room.

Hopefully they will both be involved in first team action sooner rather than later.

I have spent the last week working hard in the gym but also catching up on all the other sport.

Obviously everyone's attention has been focussed on the England rugby team and rightly so.

It wasn't a classic match against France by any means but the intensity of the England players made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. They were just awesome.

I will certainly be watching again this weekend and hoping that England can do it. I'm sure the players will be up for it after the 36-0 humiliation against South Africa in the pool game.

Back to the football, and I am really looking forward to the Tranmere game.

They have been near the top of this division for a while now and they play football the right way.

I think the fans can look forward to a good game of football, with Swindon looking to move up a few places in the league with three points.

I look forward to seeing you all at the County Ground on Saturday.
