So the fixtures for 2007/08 have been released and what a relief it is to not see teams such as Accrington Stanley, Macclesfield and Rochdale on them! Promotion back to League One is finally setting in so I thought I would scan through the fixtures and see who we are playing this season and when.
August starts off a good month with Town starting the season at Northampton which is a relatively easy fixture to get to. The following week former Town superstar Sam Parkin returns with Luton Town and we head to Cheltenham the week after to conclude the August programme. A relatively good first month that we can ease our way back to going to football week in and week out.
September’s top away day have to be the ever hostile Millwall, whilst we travel to the boring bowl that is Liberty Stadium to play Swansea City on the 2nd of October. If my memory serves me right we played Swansea away on a Tuesday night the last time we were in League One.
November sees Town travel up to Elland Road to give Mr Loyalty himself, Dennis Wise a bit of verbal abuse whilst the week after we “welcome” Bristol Rovers to the County Ground for what should be another heated local derby.
The first Tuesday in December we have the fixture that was inevitable really, a trip to Cumbria to play Carlisle away on a Tuesday night.
The Christmas programme sees us travel to Yeovil Town on Boxing Day, the site of the first official Loud and Proud away day followed by a trip to Bournemouth and the seaside. Fans will have a chance to rest their New Years hangovers as Swansea City head to town for a night fixture at the County Ground on New Years Day.
Another well awaited fixture comes on 16th February as Town head back to the City Ground to play Nottingham Forest. One will hope we can do slightly better than the 7-1 battering we had the last time out at Forest.
March is a good month for Town fans with the first game in March being against Leeds United, one has to wonder if Wise will still be manager of Leeds by the time this fixture comes around. The following Saturday Town head to Whaddon Road to play Bristol Rovers, who would have moved from the Memorial Stadium by then as it is redeveloped. The following Tuesday we travel to Leyton Orient On the 22nd we head back to Brighton to get some revenge after being knocked out of the Division 2 playoffs during the 2003/04 season which would have set up a final with local rivals Bristol City.
Town’s penultimate game will be at Gillingham whilst the final match of the season will be at home to Millwall.
Bring On the New Season!
